So big… a huge fish that scared the fishermen

by time news
The ocean holds more wonders and surprises than the wonders hidden in the soil and sky. Although scientists are trying to figure out what it is, only a few appear at unexpected times and give people a huge surprise. There are many examples of this, such as whales suddenly drifting ashore, giant fish getting caught in fishermen’s nets, and unidentified sea creatures catching sight of humans. A video of such a shocking incident is going viral on social media.

A giant fish has been found dead on the coast of the island of Faial in the Azores archipelago in Portugal. The so-called sunfish is the heaviest bony fish ever discovered in the world, according to marine scientists. While this fish died in December 2021 and washed ashore, scientists have been conducting research on it for the past one year.

After this, the results of the research on sunfish have been published in the Journal of Fish Biology. The scientific name of this gigantic fish is Mola alexandrini. It is also commonly known as the pump-head sunfish, Ramsay’s sunfish or the southern sea sunfish. The giant fish, which washed ashore dead last year, weighed 6,049 pounds or 3 tons (2,744 kg). The giant sunfish is 12 feet (3.6 meters) tall and about 11 feet (3.5 meters) long.

The study was carried out by marine scientist José Nuno Gómez-Pereira in collaboration with the Atlantic Naturalist Foundation. While the discovery of the giant sunfish indicates that the ocean is still healthy enough to harbor such a large species, there is no denying that ocean pollution and shipping are taking their toll on marine life, the Atlantic Naturalist Organization said.

And the scientists who found a dead sunfish with a large head injury, did the fish die from the injury? Or was the injury sustained after the beaching? They said that they could not detect only that. Prior to this, in 1996, a sunfish weighing 2300 kg and 272 cm long was found in the southern part of Kamogawa, Japan, and was placed in the Guinness Book of Records.
