Former captain of Indian team M.S. Dhoni made his debut in the Indian team in 2004. Still leading the way as Indian fans’ favorite captain. During his captaincy he won three ICC World Cups for India namely T20 World Cup 2007, 50 Over World Cup 2011 and Champions Trophy 2013. Always known for his quiet “cool” character. But there are moments when he also got angry on the field and got into controversy.

5. Clash with Mustafizur Rahman:

Controversy erupted when Dhoni got into a physical altercation with bowler Mustafizur Rahman during an ODI against Bangladesh in 2015. A collision with MS Dhoni caused controversy when Mustafizur Rahman was knocked down.

In the 25th over of the Indian innings, Dhoni hit the ball towards mid-off and ran in for a run. Mustafizur seemed to see Dhoni before heading towards the track where he was running. Meanwhile, Dhoni hit Mustafizur Rahman in a volley. Dhoni pushed Rahman with his forearm.

“I tried my best to avoid the collision, but I couldn’t,” Dhoni later said. While both Rahman and Dhoni denied the charges, Dhoni was fined 75 per cent of his match salary. Even though Mustafizur won the man of the match award, he was also fined 50 percent of his salary for the match.

4. World Cup Gloves with Military Emblem:

In India’s first match against South Africa at the Rose Bowl in Southampton, Dhoni wore his keeping gloves with the army insignia. A Pakistani minister slammed Dhoni for playing with his army badge. The ICC clarified that Dhoni cannot wear such a badge.

However, Dhoni received support from former Indian cricketers and the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The Board of Control for Cricket in India asked the ICC to reconsider its decision. Despite the controversy, no action was taken against Dhoni due to the support of BCCI.

3. Criticism of fielding by senior players

During the ODI tri-series in Australia, Dhoni drew some criticism as captain. It sparked a storm of controversy. Dhoni said that players like Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir should ensure that the quality of fielding is maintained. Dhoni wanted to give the young players enough exposure to playing on large-dimension grounds.

Former captain and then head of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar was of the opinion that the best playing XI should be fielded. Another former cricketer, Maninder Singh, called the policy “complete nonsense”. Sehwag later mentioned that he was angry because Dhoni had spoken like this.

2. Argument with field umpires

In 2012, another incident took place where Dhoni lost his “cool” character. The incident took place during the tri-series against India in Australia. It was during the seventh ODI at the Gabba in Brisbane that Dhoni got into an argument with the field umpires.

The Indian team asked third umpire Bruce Oxenford for a review when the field umpire refused to give him out. Hussey, who was just behind the line on replays, was first declared “out”.
