San Bernardino Mountains Storm Recovery: Volunteers Offer Lifeline to Homeowners
A surge of volunteer efforts is providing critical support to residents of the San Bernardino Mountains as they begin the arduous process of recovering from recent devastating storms. Without the dedication of these good Samaritans, many homeowners expressed uncertainty about their ability to rebuild after widespread flooding and damage.
Over the weekend, a team of volunteers focused their efforts on the property of Mike Dodgin in Piñon Hills, assisting with the cleanup following a flood that impacted his home on Christmas Eve. The scale of the destruction was immense, as described by Dodgin: “All of Sheep Creek from Wrightwood came through this property.”
The floodwaters left behind a trail of devastation, claiming nearly all of Dodgin’s possessions. “The only thing saved was a mattress,” he stated. Despite the overwhelming loss, hope remains.
Team Rubicon, a veteran-led disaster response organization, is currently spearheading the “muck out” operation at Dodgin’s residence. This initial phase involves the painstaking removal of mud and debris, a necessary step before the more complex task of demolishing and rebuilding water-damaged walls can begin.
“We have a group of volunteers that will come out to assist communities in these situations,” explained Will Chiaffino, a representative of Team Rubicon. “These disasters can be pretty overwhelming.” The organization’s presence is proving invaluable, providing both manpower and expertise during a critical time.
For 78-year-old Dodgin, the assistance extends far beyond simply clearing debris. It represents a vital lifeline in the face of unimaginable hardship. The outpouring of support underscores the resilience of communities and the power of collective action in the wake of disaster.
