Melanie Leupolz pushed her stroller to the counter when there were no photographers or cameramen when the German soccer players left Frankfurt Airport. The international flew from Chelsea to the World Cup in Australia with her son, who is not even a year old.
“That has enriched us for the last 14 days and is really nice,” said Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, who herself is the mother of an adult daughter and even a grandmother, about the presence of the Leupolz offspring. “I hope there will be a few more. It’s also a huge added value for us women to have a child with us at tournaments with the support of the DFB. I can still remember what it’s like to play tournaments – and the child not to have with you.”
Popp: “That was extremely good for us”
The trainer and captain Alexandra Popp remembered the EM 2022 when goalkeeper Almuth Schult took her twins to England. “That was extremely good for us. In fact, I think that’s a great path that we’re taking. It’s a nice change. You see the kids and you start to grin and smile,” said Popp.
Leupolz became a mother for the first time in October. She keeps her father’s name secret. She has a nanny with her for the World Cup. “It’s wonderful that I can also combine both areas, that I don’t have to decide: child or football, but that I also have the support that I can live both,” the 29-year-old midfielder said recently.
The vice European champions first fly to Dubai, from there the long journey continues to Sydney. The DFB women have their base camp in Wyong, a town of 4,500 in the state of New South Wales, almost 100 kilometers north of Sydney. The German team is expected there on Thursday morning. It starts with the first group game on July 24 in Melbourne against Morocco. (dpa)
