The political landscape in Sweden remains on edge as preliminary figures place the red-green opposition ahead with 176 mandates compared to 173 for the Tidö parties. Following these numbers, Social Democrats party secretary Tobias Baudin laid out explicit demands for Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson during a press briefing outside the party headquarters on Sveavägen 68 on Tuesday.
Baudin insisted that if the preliminary tallies hold, the current administration must acknowledge the outcome. Baudin expects two specific actions from the Prime Minister once the final results are confirmed, according to reporting by Aftonbladet. Baudin stated that first, he wanted the Prime Minister to call Magdalena Andersson and concede defeat, and second, to submit his resignation as the country’s prime minister.
Tobias Baudin further noted that Ulf Kristersson went to the election on a clear government alternative. He said that if this turns out to be the election result, the Swedish people have rejected his alternative and voted no to it, adding that it is obvious he is now trying to cling to power instead. Baudin also pointed out that after the previous election in 2022, Magdalena Andersson called Kristersson when the Wednesday votes were counted.
Highlighting the motivations behind the party’s push, Baudin emphasized that for them, it is important to reverse the direction of politics, noting that they have a healthcare system that is struggling and high unemployment.
Moderates Push Back Against Concession Demands
The governing Moderates rejected the premature calls for a resignation, maintaining that formal procedures must be respected until every ballot is tallied. Karin Enström, party secretary for the Moderates, addressed the opposition’s demands through an emailed statement to the press.
Moderates refused to preempt the election authority’s vote count, with Enström writing that they do not intend to preempt the Swedish Election Authority’s vote counting and that out of respect for the voters, they would have wished for that attitude from several parties. Ulf Kristersson is expected to provide an announcement regarding whether he will step down once the final count is completed.
Constitutional Timeline and Next Steps in Parliament
The official path forward depends entirely on whether the incumbent Prime Minister decides to step down voluntarily once the final count is locked in. If the Moderate leader announces his resignation, the sitting speaker can immediately initiate the process and hold a talmansrunda with the party leaders.
Should the Prime Minister choose not to resign, a mandatory prime ministerial vote will take place when the Riksdag opens, which can occur no earlier than September 29. To be elected prime minister, it is required that less than half of the Riksdag’s members vote no, while abstentions count as accepting or tolerating the candidate.
Opposition Prepares for Future Talks Amid Unconfirmed Contacts
While the Social Democrats have not yet initiated any negotiations with other parties in the red-green block, Baudin has maintained SMS contact with the other party secretaries in the opposition. Baudin stated that they are not yet in a position where they are talking about negotiations, noting that talks can only transition into negotiations once the final election result is clear, with future focus turning toward the other three opposition parties. He could not answer when the Social Democrats will be able to present a government.
Magdalena Andersson, who had not been seen since election night, appeared outside the Riksdag on Tuesday. She told reporters at the scene that she has had continuous contact with several people, though she did not answer who, leaving it unclear whether she meant other party leaders.
