Kolkata: Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan says that the problems of freedom of speech and civil liberties still exist in the film industry. Bachchan’s response comes in the context of protests on social media demanding a ban on Shah Rukh Khan starrer Pathan.

Bachchan pointed this out while speaking at the opening ceremony of the 28th Kolkata International Film Festival. Film stars including Shahrukh, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Governor Dr. CV Ananda Bose were also part of the function.

Shahrukh opined that social media is guided by a narrow mindset. The actor ended his speech with a Pathan dialogue, “Apni kursi ki petti bandh lijiye, mausam bigadne-wala hai (Put your seat belt on, the weather is going to turn bad)”.

Next, Deepika Padukone and Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathan song was released. It was the dress of both of them that brought a section to the point of banning Pathan.

“Cinema and expression through social media have now become the best reflection of human emotions and experiences. “I believe cinema now has an important role to play, rather than social media affecting cinema negatively,” Shahrukh said.

Shah Rukh also said that it is the need of the hour to build a better world for the future generation by using cinema to help people belonging to different culture, color, caste and religion to understand each other. “Through efforts like KIFAP, the attempt is to break existing stereotypes and build new platforms,” he added.
