After several years of warnings towards the social network, the Brazilian Government is preparing to block access to X within a few days.

The social network X (normally Twitter) can say goodbye to one of the largest user bases in a few days. A judge from the Supreme Court of Brazil has sent an order against the social network X and its owner, billionaire Elon Musk.

In this order dated August 28, judge Alexandre de Moraes called on the company to appoint a new legal representative for the company and the social network on the part of Elon Musk, this will lead to “immediate suspension of social network services.”

For his part, Elon Musk seems to be having fun with the situation. The president of X has been making jokes and insults to the judge Alexandre de Moraes in recent days. Through many posts and montages made with artificial intelligence, Elon Musk shows his opponent as “The dictator of Brazil”.

Why does Brazil want to ban X services?

Although this issue has received greater proportions in recent days, we have to go back a few years to understand it. In early 2020, several members of the Supreme Court of Brazil reported an increase in fake news and incorrect tweets about the Covid-19 epidemic. A situation which resulted in an order from the country to X to delete informational posts about the epidemic.

In 2022, things accelerated after the elections and the defeat of Bolsonaro’s candidacy. On the social network Alexandre de Moraes will often request the closure of various accounts belonging to people of the Brazilian conservative right.

This brings us back to this month of August 2024. Judge Alexandre de Moraes decided to establish an investigation against the legal representative of X in Brazil following the multiplication of false information on the social network and the restoration of many bans and accounts that linked to Bolsonaro. In response, Elon Musk finally closed the company’s offices in Brazil and filed a complaint with a judge of a petition for censorship of the social network and freedom of expression.
