Madrid – Socialist Pedro Sanchez obtained a vote of confidence in the Spanish parliament this Thursday, November 16, to return to head of government. A vote that puts an end to almost 4 months of blockade after the victory with a relative majority of the popular party in the elections on July 23rd.

Despite having only come second in July’s legislative elections, the Socialists remain in power within the framework of a coalition with the extreme left of Sumar.

Pedro Sanchez achieved an absolute majority in parliament, 179 votes, above the essential 176.

The support that Sanchez obtained from regionalist movements, including the Catalan independentists, was decisive for this.

The challenge to the adoption of an amnesty law for the training of Carles Puigdemont is still ongoing and a new demonstration against it is scheduled in Madrid for next Saturday.

However, Sanchez claims that this measure will allow the wounds to be closed again and guarantee Spain’s unity.

Puigdemont, exiled in Belgium since 2017, during the attempted secession of Catalonia, should eventually be able to return to Barcelona without being harassed by the courts.

Sanchez tries to calm tempers and promises very left-wing measures: tax increases for the richest, reduced working hours, reinforcement of regional autonomy or even recognition of the Palestinian state.
