Sofía Espín, a member of the Citizen Revolution (RC) assembly, said in an interview that the Government of Daniel Noboa has turned the former vice president of the Republic, Jorge Glas, into a martyr who now has international solidarity.

“He Government (of the president Daniel Noboa) has made the former vice president (of the Republic, Jorge Glas) and martyrand now there is a very important international solidarity.” This was stated today, July 5, 2024, by Sofía Espín, a member of the Citizen Revolution (RC), who announced the formation of an international committee for the freedom of Glas, which will be in charge of taking legal action in Ecuador and abroad to seek her release.

Since April 6, 2024, Glas has been held in the maximum security prison La Roca, in Guayaquil, after his arrest on the night of April 5 inside the Mexican Embassy where he had remained under the status of political asylum, in an event that led Mexico to break diplomatic relations with Ecuador.

In an interview on Forever radio (Guayaquil), Sofía Espín said today that, at an international level, “they don’t understand what a former vice president is doing; a person deprived of liberty of low danger, together with highly dangerous inmates; this constitutes torture, and what the Government has done is turn (Glas) into a martyr.”

The former second in command is accused of alleged embezzlement (misappropriation of public funds) in the case of “Reconstruction of Manabí,” the province most affected by the earthquake that occurred in 2016. Shortly after a judge of the National Court of Justice (CNJ) had ordered his preventive detention, Glas stayed at the Mexican Embassy where he has remained since December 2023.

The international committee is made up of the presidents of ArgentinaAlberto Fernandez; of BoliviaEvo Morales; of ColombiaErnesto Samper; and from Ecuador, Rafael Correa. They plan to send a letter to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to request the intervention of that body and the extension of precautionary measures in favor of Glas. (SC)
