Solar energy production in Azerbaijan has risen to a record level.

As reported by Day.Az on Tuesday, Vugar Bayramov, a member of the Milli Majlis (parliament) of Azerbaijan Committee on Economic Policy, Industry and Entrepreneurship, wrote about this on his social network account.

“Thus, in the first half of this year, solar energy production increased 9 times, from 32.3 million kWh to 286.6 million kWh. Electricity production in the country amounted to 13 billion 557.4 million kWh. During this period, wind power plants generated 29.7 million kWh, and solar power plants – 286.6 million kWh of electricity. Thus, electricity production from “green” energy sources, compared to the same period last year (1 billion 81.7 million kWh), almost doubled, amounted to 2 billion 32.4 million kWh,” says V. Bayramov’s publication.

According to him, the increase in renewable energy production in Azerbaijan, which will host COP29, supports the expansion of the “green” energy zone in the region.

“This is our country’s contribution to achieving global and regional goals in combating climate change and protecting the environment, as well as strengthening the green economy. In developed countries, communities and households produce energy from renewable energy sources, including wind and solar energy, for their own consumption and sell surplus to the government. The use of such practices in Azerbaijan can lead to increased electricity production, as well as cheaper energy prices for citizens. This can reduce electricity costs, as well as allow for a new approach to energy production and sale. For this, it is also important to form an integrated community-based infrastructure.

Azerbaijan’s renewable energy potential is estimated at 27,000 MW. Of these, 23,000 MW is solar energy and 3,000 MW is wind energy. Solar energy can be used to organize production almost throughout the entire country. Baku, Absheron and Khizi regions are considered more favorable for wind energy,” the MP noted in the publication.
