A pilot floating solar power plant with a capacity of 100 kW has been officially put into operation on Lake Boyukshor in Baku, Day.Az reported on Tuesday, citing the Azerbaijani Ministry of Energy.
This project is part of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) regional initiative “Development of Floating Solar Energy Systems” covering Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan and was called “Knowledge Sharing and Technical Assistance for Development of Floating Solar Panel System”
The project was carried out by the Spanish company Gamma Solutions with a grant from the ADB and resulted in the creation of three main blocks of panels that operate on the principle of a solar battery, where a direct current photovoltaic generator uses the effect of converting solar energy into electrical energy.
Speaking at the ceremony today, Javid Abdullayev, Director of the State Agency for Renewable Energy Sources (RES) under the Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan, noted that this facility fits into Azerbaijan’s strategy for decarbonization and combating climate change.
Abdullaev recalled that thanks to the commissioning of the Garadag solar power plant (SPP, Masdar project) in the fall of 2023, according to statistics, by July 2024, electricity generation at SPPs in the country increased 8 times.
“The new solar power plant on Lake Boyukshor concerns the annual production of more than 160 thousand kilowatt-hours of electricity. This is the first project of its kind in Azerbaijan, it has 100 kW of alternating current capacity, of which 95 kW is directly for the floating part of the station (FPV) and 5 kW for the land part,” Abdullayev emphasized.
ADB Country Director for Azerbaijan Candice McDeigan said that “the launch of this innovative project ahead of COP29 is of great importance.”
“This project provides another source of green energy, optimizes the combined use of water and solar resources and prevents carbon dioxide emissions,” the ADB representative said.
It should be noted that the share of renewable energy sources in the overall energy balance of Azerbaijan (including hydropower) currently amounts to 15%.
By 2030, Azerbaijan plans to increase the share of renewable energy sources in the country’s energy capacity to 34%.
