Sold a dollar store and moved with his wife and baby to live in the office: this is the man Musk brought in to tidy up Twitter

Not many know the name Steve Davis. But the CEO of The Boring Company – Elon Musk’s mining company, is one of the most important and close people to Musk. But who is he anyway?

Know a Seinfeld trivia? Get a discount on the ice cream

Davis is an entrepreneur and aerospace engineer with a very unique sense of humor. In the past, he managed to open a store selling frozen yogurt called Mr Yogato (yes, like Mr Roboto) in Washington – the capital of the USA. He did not set up the store to close the month, because he did it while working at SpaceX and while completing a doctorate in economics. He started the store simply because he missed the style of the yogurt sold in California where he came from.

The Frozen Yogurt store offered discounts to customers who answered general trivia questions, to those who could accurately reproduce all 47 seconds of the choreography to Michael Jackson’s Thriller song or who were presented with trivia questions about Seinfeld, which he would not be able to answer. But that’s not all. If you happened to come to the store dressed as the Swedish tennis legend Bjorn Borg – you also got a discount, because why not?

At some point, Davis decided that he had exhausted the experience, and held an event where he offered to sell his store for one dollar. 250 people signed up for the list, and after Davis narrowed the list down to 16 candidates – he held an “open house” with them at the store, during which he showed them how to make the yogurt, and even revealed to them the financial situation of the store. In the end the lucky winner was a music producer.

Davis also managed to start a bar called Thomas Fullery, which is also a play on words (the word Tomfoolery means “ridiculous behavior”, which can happen quite a bit in bars). Thomas Fullery was the first bar in the US capital to accept payment in Bitcoin, including an “angry hour” where you got a discount if you shouted your drink order or if you danced like Carlton from The Prince Charming of Bel Air (yes, we’re also listening to Tom’s It’s not unusual now Jones because of this line).

Brought the wife and the baby to sleep in the office

Musk handpicked Davis to run the Boring Company, Musk’s mining company, which builds underground tunnels for vehicles under cities. Davis has headed it as the company’s president since November 2019, after being part of its development team since 2016. According to a book published about Musk in recent years, Davis is the perfect type to work with the richest man in the world. He previously received a challenge from Musk to build a part that costs $120,000 for only $5,000. He managed to do it for $3,900, and after informing Musk by email about the achievement – he received an email reply with one word. “Ok”.

Musk brought Davis in to “sort out” Twitter, which prompted him, according to a report from last December, to move into the office. However, Davis wasn’t content to sleep in the office, and since he just had a baby, his wife and baby moved in with him at Twitter’s headquarters in San Francisco.

According to the Financial Times, although Davis was not announced as Musk’s replacement, he is part of his closest team, and he is the one who was responsible for part of the latest wave of layoffs at the company last month. According to the report, Davis sat together with Musk in a “war room” at Twitter’s offices and called employees so that they would “justify their role in the company.”

In the FT’s report (via ArsTechnica), it is indicated by sources within Twitter that Davis actually behaves like the company’s COO, and he is the one who decided which jobs to cut from Twitter together with James Musk – Elon’s cousin, and who currently manages the company’s engineering department – and Jared Birchall who runs Musk’s Family Office.

Befitting someone who managed to create a part costing $120,000 for only $3,900, Musk wants Davis to lead the cost-cutting of Twitter – a trend that hasn’t stopped since its purchase by Musk in late October. Whether it’s the never-ending layoffs, reports of the cessation of payments for utilities and rent, and more, Musk continues to try to make the company profitable.

As mentioned, Davis has not been announced in any way as Musk’s official successor, but he is certainly positioning himself well in this direction. Musk, as expected, is in no hurry to announce anything on the subject and if we know him well – it will probably happen in a tweet. Maybe a meme will also be involved in the matter.
