Entrepreneurship remains a powerful driving force in the Brazilian economy, according to the most recent survey “Perfil do MEI 2023”, published by Sebrae. Individual Microentrepreneurs (MEIs) form a significant group in Brazil, with approximately 14.8 million entrepreneurs formalized in Simples Nacional. This group represents approximately 68% of Brazilian companies.

The Sebrae survey highlights that entrepreneurial activity represents the only source of income for 78% of this segment. In almost 37% of these entrepreneurs’ homes, the family income comes entirely from their business activities. This suggests that entrepreneurship is a vital way for many Brazilians to support themselves and their families.

The figure of the MEI assumes an essential role in the Brazilian economy. They are considered key players in the country’s economic recovery. In fact, 69% of MEIs believe that formalizing their business helped to increase sales and was decisive in boosting the commercialization of their products and services.

The main motivation for many to become entrepreneurs is the search for independence. 42% of MEIs cited this as their main reason for starting their own businesses, compared to 20% who cited the need to find a source of income.

In order to support the continuous growth of entrepreneurship in Brazil, Sebrae annually organizes the MEI Week. This year, the event will take place from May 22nd to 26th and will be free. The event presents a series of activities, lectures and practical workshops, both online and face-to-face, spread throughout the country.

Interested parties can find more information and the full schedule at Sebrae’s website. The event aims to promote networking, share useful tips and inspiring stories to encourage even more people to join the world of entrepreneurship.
