RIYADH: In Saudi Arabia, soliciting financial aid through social media is punishable. The lawyer warned that this is an offense punishable by a fine of 50,000 riyals (Rs 10 lakh) or six months imprisonment. Lawyer Sara Al Harbi revealed to Saudi television that requests for help through social media fall under electronic begging.
She said such requests for help are illegal in Saudi Arabia and are considered begging. The punishment for beggars and those who help them is six months imprisonment or a fine of 50,000 Riyals. If the offense is repeated, the fine will be doubled, they added. Foreigners involved in begging will be deported after being sentenced and banned from returning to Saudi Arabia.

Help is delivered to the needy through legitimate charity platforms in Saudi Arabia. Saudi authorities have reminded that both natives and expatriates should make donations only through legal means. Last year, Saudi Arabia launched the Ihsan platform, which can deliver aid to the needy through smartphone applications.
