Solidarity Organization: International investigation is necessary to ensure justice for Derna victims

by times news cr

The Solidarity for Human Rights Organization expressed its dissatisfaction with the lack of justice and the continued suffering of the people of Derna in its statement on the first anniversary of the flood disaster that struck the city and claimed the lives of thousands.

The organization stated in its statement that the Libyan authorities’ abject failure to implement flood warnings led to huge human and material losses, noting that the investigations conducted in this regard did not affect the entrenched political class.

The organization stressed that what makes the situation worse is the absence of a clear strategy for rebuilding the city, which threatens to exacerbate the suffering of its residents.

The statement pointed out that there are “more than three thousand people whose fate is still unknown, and that tens of thousands of the city’s residents are displaced,” stressing that the lack of official statistics on the flood victims increases the suffering of their families.

The Solidarity for Human Rights Organization called for an independent international investigation into the reasons for the failure to address the flood disaster, and for the formation of an independent body of experts to develop a comprehensive strategy for the reconstruction of the city of Derna, while ensuring that the funds allocated for this purpose are not wasted.

The statement stressed that “without an independent international investigation and without an independent body with expertise, justice will not be achieved for the thousands of victims who lost their lives that day, and there will be no future for their families.”
