Above all, there is a lack of summer clothing for children and men.

Solingen. With the beginning of the warm season, Stefan Nippes would like to make an urgent appeal to the Solingen population: “Our shelves have been cleared,” says the deputy district manager of the DRK district association about the stocks of the clothing store on Burgstrasse. “There is just a lack of everything at the moment.” Above all, summer clothing in general, especially for men and children, as well as bed linen are needed.
Although the clothing store is always very busy, the donation issue in Mitte has been particularly popular in recent weeks.
Many citizens cleaned out their closets at home during the Corona pandemic, but then the willingness to donate decreased. “Apparently many people are now trying to sell their old things online,” suspects Nippes, who knows only too well the needs of the people who use the clothing store’s help. “When money gets tight, people eventually get the idea that they have to get clothes from the Red Cross.” The shame of those affected is often very great. Refugees from Ukraine in particular need clothing, but things such as bed linen or tablecloths are also in great demand. Even if the latter are of course not essential to life, table linen has a very high cultural value for Ukrainians, Nippes observes. “Many are used to sitting down at a set table with the family. Something like a tablecloth just means a lot to them.”
Things should be washed and packed if possible
Although the clothing store primarily accepts textiles, other household items such as pots and pans are also welcome. “We’re happy when people give us their stuff ready for use,” says Nippes. Garments should therefore be washed if possible and packed in bags or boxes.
Donations are accepted at Burgstraße 105 daily from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. In addition, donations can be thrown into the containers in the DRK yard at any time. The distribution to the needy takes place every Thursday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
