மொகாதிசு,

Mohamed Burmajo has been the first president of the East African nation of Somalia since 2017. His term of office ended last February and he has extended his tenure for another 2 years.

There was a disagreement between him and Prime Minister Mohammed Hussein Robel over the issue. As a result, the general election there last month was postponed.

He was accused of embezzling land belonging to the navy for personal gain in the wake of the political turmoil there. But Roebel categorically denies the allegations against him.

In this context, President Burmajo yesterday ordered the removal of Prime Minister Robel, citing allegations of corruption. He also fired the Somali naval commander over the scandal. The dismissal of the prime minister on corruption charges has sent shockwaves through Somalia’s political circles.
