In 2021 and 2022, the Polish club, Grupa Azoty ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle, turned out to be the best in the volleyball Champions League. It seemed that it couldn’t be any better. In the current games, it turned out that… maybe, because in the final of this year’s edition of the most important club competitions in Europe, as many as two of our teams will take part!
Jastrzębski Węgiel was the first to play in the decisive final triumph. Although on Wednesday the Polish team lost the return match against the Turkish Halkbank Ankara 2:3, they still won the promotion, because in the first match away they won 3:1.
– We’ve done something great. We have our moment of glory not only on the Polish arena, but also on the European and global arena. This will be remembered for years, and something more can be done – said after the match Jakub Popiwczak, libero of the team for which this is the greatest success in the history of the international arena.
Before the semi-finals, it seemed that it would be much more difficult for the team from Kędzierzyn-Koźle to succeed, i.e. to eliminate the rival. The star-studded opponent from Perugia seemed to be the strongest of the four-team left in the Champions League.
In the home match a week ago, it turned out that the favorite can be successfully fought. The 3-1 triumph gave hope for the final, but it was still necessary to play away and win in at least two sets. The Polish champion in Italy decided to settle the matter quickly, won the first game to 23, the second to 18 and could start celebrating. The Polish final has become a fact.
We will find out on May 20 whether ZAKSA will be the best in the Champions League for the third time in a row, or whether this time the trophy will go to Jastrzębski Węgiel. The final match will take place in Turin on this day.
