Minutes before 8 a.m. on Friday, July 26, 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gabriela Sommerfeld, went to the Oversight Commission of the National Assembly, to present her evidence in her defense, in the substantiation phase of the impeachment trial promoted by JaJhajaira Urresta, a legislator of the Correaist Citizen Revolution movement (RC5).

The trial began on July 2, 2024, after the ruling National Democratic Action (ADN) movement failed to gather enough votes to prevent the chancellor from being questioned.

The Correísmo accuses Sommerfeld of failing to fulfill her duties and holds her responsible for the National Police raid on the Mexican Embassy in Quito on the night of April 5, 2024, which ended with the capture of former Vice President Jorge Glas, who took refuge in that diplomatic headquarters and was later granted political asylum by the Government of Manuel López Obrador, despite the fact that Glas was convicted of two cases of corruption and there is another investigation underway.

Due to this situation, the Mexican president broke off diplomatic relations with Ecuador. Foreign Minister Sommerfeld has maintained her firm position that there is no reason to justify granting political asylum to a person who has a final sentence for common crimes.

Regarding this impeachment, the President of the National Assembly, Henry Kronfle, has so far announced that the Social Christian Party (PSC) will not vote to censure the minister. The Construye party has also expressed a similar opinion.
