Coach Hong selects Hong Hyun-seok as replacement player
Son Heung-min (Tottenham, photo), who suffered a thigh injury, will not be able to play in the two games of the 2026 North and Central America World Cup Asia 3rd qualifying round held in October.
The Korea Football Association announced on the 4th, “We have decided to exclude Son Heung-min from the national team call-up in October in order to protect the player as it has been determined that he needs rest due to a left thigh injury.” On the 30th of last month, national soccer team coach Hong Myung-bo included Son Heung-min when announcing the national team roster (26 players) for two consecutive games in October of the North and Central America World Cup Asian third qualifying round. At the time, Coach Hong said, “I communicated directly with Son Heung-min, and although he is not in a condition to play right away, he said he was feeling his injured area gradually improving, so I included him in the list.” He said, “It is still important, but the most important thing is performance when going to the World Cup finals, so the team and the Football Association will continue to communicate and find a way,” adding that he has no intention of forcing Son Heung-min to play.
Son Heung-min has not been able to play since he withdrew to the bench after complaining of thigh pain during his team Tottenham’s UEFA Europa League match on the 27th of last month. He missed both the English Premier League (EPL) game on the 30th of last month and the Europa League visit to Hungary on the 4th.
Coach Hong selected Hong Hyun-seok (Mainz) as a replacement for Son Heung-min. Hong Hyun-seok, who played for Ghent in the Belgian league, moved to Mainz in the German Bundesliga in August this year. Hong Hyun-seok was named to the national team during the Asian second qualifying round of the World Cup in March and June of this year, but was not selected during the two-game series of the third qualifying round last month, which was the first call-up after Coach Hong took office.
Korea will play a visiting match against Jordan on the 10th and face Iraq at Yongin Mir Stadium in Gyeonggi Province on the 15th.
