Hamza Al-Dahdouh, the eldest son of the head of the office of Al Jazeera In Gaza, Wael Al-Dahdouh, was killed in a suspected Israeli attack in southern Gaza. Hamza, who was a journalist and cameraman for the Qatari television network, was with other journalists on a road between Khan Younis and Rafah when the alleged drone attack occurred.

Independent journalist Mustafa Thuraya also died. Four other members of Wael’s family died in October in an Israeli attack: his wife, Amna, his grandson Adam, his son Mahmoud, 15, and his daughter Sham, seven.

According to Hisham Zaqout, correspondent of Al Jazeera, Hamza and a group of journalists were heading to the Moraj area, northeast of Rafah, designated a “humanitarian zone” by the Israeli army, but which had reportedly recently suffered shelling.

Many displaced Gazans had fled to the area to escape bombing in other regions of the territory. Hamza intended to report on the developing situation and the consequences of the shelling in the area, according to Al Jazeera.

Images broadcast live by Al Jazeera They showed the impact of the attack on the vehicle in which they were traveling. It also showed his father Wael crying, next to his body, holding his hand, in a morgue in Khan Yunis. His body was buried in the city of Rafah.

“Hamza wasn’t just part of me. It was my totality. It was the soul of my soul. These are tears of sadness, of loss. These are tears of humanity,” his father said at the funeral. “I call on the world to look closely at what is happening in Gaza.”

Wael himself was wounded and his cameraman Samer Abu Daqqa was killed in another attack while filming last month. Wael, who has eight children, continued reporting on the war in Gaza.

Hamza had a million followers on Instagram. His last publication was dedicated to his father. “You remain firm and patient. Do not despair before the mercy of God. Rest assured, he will reward you,” she wrote.

Al Jazeera condemned what it said was an “attack” on Palestinian journalists in Gaza. “Al Jazeera Media Network strongly condemns the attacks by the Israeli occupation forces against the vehicle of Palestinian journalists“, the company said in a statement and accused Israel of “violating the principles of press freedom.”

The BBC contacted the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to request information about what happened. Mark Regev, an advisor to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, told the program World This Weekend from the BBC that “Israel does not deliberately attack journalists”.

“We are the only country in the Middle East that truly has a free press. “We are the only country in the entire region where the press can write bad things and criticize government leaders,” he stated.

“To say that Israel deliberately attacks the press is ridiculous, we are the only country that truly enshrines a free press.” More than 75 journalists have been killed since the war in Gaza began.

According to the Hamas-run Ministry of Health, More than 22,000 people have died in Gaza.
