Mia Bieniemy, 57, wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, was hospitalized in stable condition after being shot at the couple’s Virginia home late Sunday night. Their 27-year-old son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy, was arrested and charged with malicious wounding and firearms offenses by local police.
Shooting in Virginia Home and Police Arrest
The incident unfolded at a residence located on the 20000 block of Northpark Drive in the One Loudoun neighborhood of Ashburn, Virginia. According to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report of a shooting at 7:32 p.m. ET on Sunday.
Police confirmed that a woman was treated for serious injuries from multiple gunshot wounds. Sources told Mia Bieniemy was shot in the chest and arm during the domestic incident at the family’s home.
The couple’s son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, was taken into custody following the incident. Law enforcement officials charged him with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside of a dwelling. According to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, he is currently being held without bond at a detention center in Loudoun County.

Eric Bieniemy was not present for Monday’s practice at training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, having immediately left the campus at Missouri Western State where the team had conducted their second practice just hours earlier on Sunday.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid addressed the team’s situation after Monday’s practice, offering support for his assistant coach while outlining operational adjustments for the coaching staff.
“Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said after Monday’s practice. “Mia is stable, which is a plus. We all love EB, and you hate seeing those things happen.”

Reid announced that pass game coordinator Joe Bleymaier will assume Eric Bieniemy’s duties during his absence, noting that there is currently no set timetable for the offensive coordinator’s return to the team.
“We’ll just see how things go. [This is] real life, you take care of that. She’s a saint, one of God’s good blessings. But things happen.”

Eric Bieniemy returned to Kansas City earlier this year to resume his role as offensive coordinator, a position he previously held from 2018 to 2022. His coaching history with the franchise also includes a five-year stint as running backs coach starting in 2013.
