Song Seung-hwan appeared as a guest on KBS 2TV’s ‘Let’s Live Together 3 with Park Won-sook’ aired on the 25th.

When asked when he debuted, Song Seung-hwan said, “I debuted in 1965 as Chadol in the KBS radio drama ‘Eunbangul and Chadol’ when I was in the third grade of elementary school. My school told me that I was good at reading Korean textbooks, so they asked me to participate in a children’s story contest, and I won first place. A few months later, I moved to TV. I played Ttolttoli in ‘The Adventures of Ttolttoli.’ In 1970, I appeared in ‘Miss.’ I played the son of the foolish Yeong-gu in KBS’s ‘Yeoro.’ It was so successful that everyone recognized me.”

Park Won-sook said, “Radio appearance fees are not calculated,” and Song Seung-hwan said, “The appearance fee was 100 won per episode. When I was MC for a special Children’s Day program, I was given school supplies instead of an appearance fee.”

When asked, “When was your prime?” Song Seung-hwan said, “I started acting again after entering college, but I couldn’t make a living with just acting, so I thought I should do TV shows too. Do you remember the MBC drama ‘The Third Classroom’? After appearing in that, I was the MC for ‘March of Youth’ in 1980, DJed ‘To You Who Forgot the Night’, and produced two works by writer Kim Soo-hyun, ‘Let’s Love’ and ‘I’m Back’.”

He continued, “At that time, Mr. Kim Soo-hyun’s dramas were extremely popular. Then, I did the play ‘Equus’. One day, there was an article in the culture section of the newspaper saying that I was doing ‘Equus’, and in the entertainment section saying that I was the new MC for ‘March of Youth’. There were several articles about me in one newspaper. From then on, I was called a star.”
Song Seung-hwan surprised everyone by saying, “The first discotheque was opened at the Chosun Hotel. The first DJs were Yoo In-chon, Song Seung-hwan, Joo Byung-jin, and Seo Se-won. After ‘To You Who Forgot the Night’ ended, we went to the Chosun Hotel and played for exactly 20 minutes. We played three disco songs and one slow song. At that time, my three-month appearance fee was the price of an apartment.”

He continued, “Then my family went bankrupt and I lost all the money I earned. Because my family was going through hard times, I used the money I earned when I was young to pay off my parents’ debt, so the money I earned in my 20s didn’t last very long.”

He recalled, “I was so busy making money that I haven’t had a manager since I was young. It was 2 or 3 in the morning when I got home after finishing at the Chosun Hotel. I had to leave at 6 because of the morning shoot. I didn’t have time to eat, so I piled up kimbap on the passenger seat and ate it while driving. I had to memorize my lines, so I pinned the script to the steering wheel with a clothespin and memorized my lines while driving, and when the light went red, I opened the clothespin, opened the script, and memorized it while driving. But I had fun and liked it.”

He added, “I made a lot of money, but I felt empty after blowing it all. I thought there was no use in making money in my 20s, and that it would be better to see and experience a lot rather than making money, so I went to New York. I went with my engaged wife.”
