Son’s kidney fails due to torture by Coimbatore city police

Coimbatore: The mother of a 22-year-old man, suspected in an attempt to murder case, on Monday accused the police of torturing her son during illegal detention and said his kidneys had failed.

On Monday, the mother of one of the suspects, R Jayakumar (22), alleged that the police picked him up on September 16 and kept him in illegal custody till September 18. “After reporting him missing at the police control room, we received information from the Kovilpalayam police that my son has been detained at the Kattoor police station. We went there and found him with injury marks on his face and body. The next day he was not at the police station and police said he had been transferred but did not say where he was taken. We saw him only after he was sent to custody on September 20,” said R Dhanalakshmi, Jayakumar’s mother.

In her complaint submitted at the police commissioner’s office, Dhanalakshmi said, “After my son refused to accept the allegations, the police took him to several places, gagged him and hit him on his stomach, hip and thigh. Beat with a pipe. His kidney got injured and he was unable to urinate. Apart from this, blood was also found in his urine. My son was admitted to Tiruppur GH and shifted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on Saturday after his health deteriorated. Now he is on dialysis.”

“We came to know about his health condition only after he was lodged in Tirupur jail on September 21. The very next day he was admitted to the government hospital in Tirupur. Doctors said his kidneys had failed.” City Police Commissioner V Balakrishnan said an assistant commissioner-level officer would investigate the allegations. Dr A Nirmala, dean of Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH), told TNIE that a patient from the prisoners’ ward was admitted for dialysis, but did not reveal his identity.
