With “Ghost of Yotei,” Sony finally announced the official successor to “Ghost of Tsushima” this week. According to Sucker Punch, this is far from the end of the series. Instead, the studio has ambitious goals for the franchise.

This week, Sony made several new announcements in the current edition of “State of Play”. Among them is “Ghost of Yotei”, a sequel whose story takes place about 300 years after the events of “Ghost of Tsushima”.

In line with this announcement, Nate Fox and Jason Connell from Sucker Punch spoke in an interview with the New York Times about their future plans for the franchise. According to the duo, who will once again share the role of Creative Directors for “Ghost of Yotei,” “Ghost of Tsushima” is officially transitioning into a franchise with the announcement of “Ghost of Yotei.”

With this transition, the Sucker Punch team has ambitious plans according to Fox and Connell.

What happens next with the franchise?

It is well known that alongside “Ghost of Yotei,” there is also a film adaptation of “Ghost of Tsushima” in the works. However, that won’t be the end of it. Additionally, Sucker Punch plans “further spin-offs,” which Fox and Connell did not elaborate on. Instead, Fox spoke further in the interview about the work on “Ghost of Yotei.”

The Sucker Punch team aimed to dig deep into the DNA of the first game and carry that forward into the sequel. “When we started working on a sequel, the first question we asked ourselves was: ‘What is the DNA of a Ghost game?’” Fox explained.

“It’s about transporting the player into the romance and beauty of feudal Japan.”

Much of the inspiration came from the now-inactive volcano Yotei-zan, which was also seen in the first trailer for the sequel. To create the most authentic atmosphere possible, the team visited the national park at the northeast tip of Hokkaido for sound recordings.

The sequel is meant to convey a sense of danger

Fox commented on the visit to the national park as follows: “In the park, you have to watch a video about the dangers of bears. Being in this incredibly beautiful park with rugged cliffs and water, while knowing there are dangerous bears around, was electrifying.”

“We strive to bring that into the video game – that feeling of danger,” the Creative Director concluded.

“Ghost of Yotei” is set to be released in 2025 for PS5 and tells the story of a new female protagonist: Atsu. Regarding the official announcement of the sequel, Sucker Punch stated: “Even though we are not dealing with the details of the story today, we can reveal that Atsu’s journey takes place in 1603, more than 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima.”

“Our story takes place in the area around Mount Yotei. A towering peak in the heart of Ezo, a region of Japan that is now known as Hokkaido.”
