Sony is bringing Quick Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-guided graphics upscaler born from its Project Amethyst collaboration with AMD, to base PlayStation 5 consoles. The technology rolls out via software patches for Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, offering players improved image detail and stability without requiring a PS5 Pro.
High-end machine learning graphics have long been the exclusive domain of mid-generation console hardware, leaving the original PlayStation 5 to rely on conventional rendering methods. That divide narrows as Sony introduces Quick Spectral Super Resolution, an artificial intelligence upscaler designed specifically for the standard console. While PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution on the PlayStation 5 Pro remains the gold standard, the new software tier brings similar performance benefits to the hardware sitting in millions of living rooms.
Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei Launch With QSSR Support
The technology debuts immediately through patches for two prominent titles. Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first games to incorporate the library as an optional graphics setting. Developers at Insomniac Games and Sucker Punch Productions report that the tool handles complex visual geometry significantly better than traditional temporal anti-aliasing methods.
QSSR adds more pixel-level clarity and stability to our environments, bringing out extra detail amidst the busy streets of Madripoor, the dense alleyways of Shinjuku, and many other areas across Logan’s epic journey.
Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology at Insomniac Games
At Sucker Punch Productions, engineers noted similar gains across environmental assets. Studio representatives emphasized that the system resolves fine textures on characters and foliage with a degree of temporal stability previously unattainable on the base hardware. Following the launch of the upscaler in Ghost of Yōtei and Marvel’s Wolverine, the upscaler is likely going to see widespread adoption in already released games, judging from what Daniel Craig, Principal Engineer for Graphics R&D at SIE told Digital Foundry.
QSSR excels at resolving the fine details in our characters and environments and does so with a level of temporal stability that hasn’t been possible on the PS5 console until now.

Project Amethyst Improves Image Detail and Stability on PS5
Built as part of Project Amethyst with AMD, the system relies on two primary innovations: a streamlined neural network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation tailored for the base console’s graphical processor. QSSR relies on streamlined neural network architecture
and a hand-tuned implementation that maximizes performance on PS5
which, combined, are supposed to bring notable improvements to both image detail and image stability on PS5.
Daniel Craig, Principal Engineer for Graphics R&D at SIE says, It's great to be improving the PS5 this far into the generation, enabling developers to make even better-looking games.

Early technical breakdowns from industry analysts indicate that the computational cost varies by resolution. When targeting a 1440p output from a lower base resolution, the feature incurs a frame-time overhead of roughly 1.5ms to 1.8ms. In dynamic 60Hz performance modes, that cost is largely masked by dynamic resolution scaling, though uncapped 120Hz modes reveal a heavier performance tax depending on the scene complexity. On PS5 Pro, developers almost uniformly output to 4K and adjust render resolution beneath it,
Sony principal graphics R&D engineer Daniel Craig told Digital Foundry.
Drop-In Integration for Future PlayStation Developers
Sony intends to distribute the graphics library broadly across the developer ecosystem. According to engineering leads, the architecture functions as a drop-in replacement for existing titles that already support the Pro model’s upscaler, requiring only a few days of fine-tuning for streaming settings and texture mip levels. On PS5, teams have to be more flexible, tuning not just render resolution, but also their intermediate and final presentation targets depending on the graphics mode.
While the Pro model continues to drive native 4K output, the new software tier provides standard console owners with an accessible alternative to conventional upscalers like AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution. As studios begin authoring future projects with both performance tiers in mind, the update offers a viable pathway for extending the lifespan and visual fidelity of the original console generation.
