Sony’s Monitor & Control App Gains Multi-Camera Support, Enhanced Features

A significant update to Sony’s Monitor & Control (M&C) application is now available, streamlining remote camera operation for professionals using smartphones and tablets. The latest version, 2.0.0, introduces a multi-camera monitoring feature and expanded camera compatibility, addressing key user demands for greater control and flexibility in the field.

The update, released on Thursday, allows users to simultaneously monitor and control up to four cameras, a capability comparable to Apple’s Final Cut Camera app for iOS, which debuted in May. This feature is currently exclusive to iPadOS, supporting both wired and wireless connections via Wi-Fi or mobile hotspots for remote shooting scenarios. When asked about potential expansion to iPhone and Android platforms, Sony has yet to provide a response, according to reports from The Verge.

Beyond the headline multi-camera functionality, the M&C app now boasts support for a wider range of Sony cameras, including the Burano, FX6, FX3, FX30, Alpha 1, Alpha 9 III, and Alpha 7S III models. This broadened compatibility ensures a more seamless experience for professionals invested in the Sony ecosystem.

One of the most anticipated improvements is the implementation of full-screen monitoring across all supported camera models. According to a company release, this feature resolves longstanding complaints regarding cropped or resized camera feeds on external screens, providing “a direct, unobstructed view.”

The update also delivers a suite of usability enhancements. Users can now select and adjust up to three tools on screen, and benefit from more intuitive controls for critical camera settings. These include adjustments for frame rate, sensitivity, shutter speed, ND filter, view, and white balance.

Version 2.0.0 of the M&C app is available as a free download from both the App Store and Google Play. This update represents a substantial step forward in Sony’s commitment to providing professional-grade monitoring and control solutions for its camera users, empowering filmmakers and photographers with greater flexibility and efficiency on set.
