Sony Group Corporation Transfers 419 XR Patents to Meta

Sony Group Corporation transferred hundreds of extended reality and virtual reality patents to Meta in late 2025 and 2026, including dozens filed in the United States. The transaction moves foundational intellectual property away from the PlayStation maker as consumer console VR hardware support remains quiet.

Sony Group Corporation transferred 419 global patents covering virtual, augmented, and mixed reality technologies to rival Meta Platforms, according to public patent office records and industry reports.

Sony Group Corporation is listed as the seller on every cover sheet for the five filings logged at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Sony Interactive Entertainment, the subsidiary that designs and sells PlayStation VR2, is named on none of them.

ZDNet Korea initially broke the news of the transfers, tallying 43 US patents assigned to Meta between June and September alongside 419 worldwide patents encompassed by the underlying agreement.

Meta’s paperwork was executed on April 29, 2026, by Jeremiah Chan, Director and Associate General Counsel, Patents. Asashi Shimodaira of Sony’s Intellectual Property and Standards Division signed on April 30.

Sony Divests Global Patent Portfolio

The transfer involves properties filed over more than a decade of research and development. The paperwork accounts for 419 patents worldwide, spanning multiple key international markets.

  • 180 U.S. patents included in the total global agreement signed in December 2025.
  • 239 regional patents filed across Japan, China, South Korea, Europe, and other jurisdictions.
  • 43 U.S. properties officially recorded as transferred at the USPTO between June and September 2026, split into 2 in June, 20 in July, and 21 in September.

The portfolio includes foundational work on head-mounted displays and related XR engineering that Sony developed between 2010 and 2022. This timeline bridges early head-mounted display experiments and the development cycles for both the original PlayStation VR and the PlayStation VR2.

PlayStation VR2 Faces Hardware Uncertainty

Sony launched the PlayStation VR 2 in February 2023 at a recommended retail price of $549.99, alongside a $599.99 bundle featuring Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Call of the Mountain.

Bespoke first-party software support remained sparse despite early praise for the hardware’s engineering. Horizon Call of the Mountain published alongside only one other major first-party title, First Contact Entertainment’s Firewall Ultra.

The second-generation headset moved 600,000 units in the six weeks after its launch, outpacing the original PSVR headset, which launched with support from PlayStation engineers pairing an earlier head-mounted display model with PlayStation Move controllers.
