Sony Launches October 2026 PS Plus Essential Games Featuring F1 25

Sony has officially rolled out its October 2026 PlayStation Plus Essential lineup, introducing three titles available to download starting Tuesday, October 6. Subscribers can claim the monthly games through Monday, November 2, alongside a separate suite of promotional digital avatar drops and seasonal horror content across multiple platforms.

The October offering spans sim racing, cooperative shooter action, and competitive tactical survival. The games land on the service following a September rotation that included Sniper Elite: Resistance, MLB The Show 26, Wobbly Life, and Chained Echoes, which remained available for user libraries until Monday, October 5.

F1 25 Headlines the October Monthly Lineup

Leading the new arrivals is F1 25, the officially licensed title for the 2025 FIA Formula One World Championship. Developed by Codemasters and released for the PS5, the racing simulation features single-player experiences including Career and My Team 2.0, where players act as team owners managing car development, sponsor costs, and driver rosters. The game also includes Braking Point 3, a narrative-driven story mode following the fictional Konnersport team across the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

For players seeking multiplayer competition, F1 World introduces online racing modes alongside a cooperative feature that lets squads compete against AI-controlled drivers. Codemasters utilized LiDAR scanning to build accurate circuit surfaces, kerbs, and elevation changes for tracks such as Bahrain, Miami, Melbourne, Suzuka, and Imola. The base game is included in the subscription, though EA’s separate 2026 Season Pack — adding newer cars, active aerodynamics, Overtake Mode, and the Madrid circuit — requires an independent purchase priced at $24.99 or £24.99 on the PlayStation Store.

Three Core Titles Arrive for October

Joining the racing simulator are two distinct shooter experiences. Hunt: Showdown 1896 brings Crytek’s gothic horror extraction shooter to the PS5. Set in a corrupted alternative American Wild West, players track down bosses, claim bounties, and attempt to extract safely while dodging both grotesque monsters and rival online hunters. The title supports solo play or squads of up to three players, carrying high stakes where death results in the loss of the hunter and equipped gear.

Meanwhile, Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2 serves as the sole October selection available on both PS5 and PS4. Built with voxel-style graphics by studio Yuke’s, the spin-off tasks players with rescuing scattered teammates across the globe to assemble a four-person squad. The title supports four-player online co-op and two-player local split-screen.

Providing extensive customisation options, Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2 lets users battle against giant robots and monsters across more than 100 missions while unlocking a roster exceeding 100 playable characters. Bounty Hunt serves as its primary mode, supporting solo, duo, or trio sessions where perishing carries the severe penalty of forfeiting the hunter alongside all their equipment.

Sony Introduces Regional Game Changes and Promotional Perks

The October rollout features notable regional alterations. Japanese subscribers received Hello Neighbor instead of Hunt: Showdown 1896, while the core trio remained standard for other global markets. Alongside the main games, Sony introduced promotional content including limited-edition Spider-Man: Brand New Day avatars on Sony Pictures Core starting October 6, restricted to regions with access to the app.

During October, Sony is also providing extra perks like limited-time HorrorFest bundles for titles such as Hunt: Showdown 1896, Overwatch 2, and Call of Duty: Warzone, alongside Spider-Man: Brand New Day avatars accessible via Sony Pictures Core.

  • Call of Duty: Warzone Horror Bundle, available from October 1
  • Hunt: Showdown 1896 Starter Pack, available from October 6
  • Overwatch 2 Dragur Reinhardt pack with five tier skips, available from October 7

Sony Reduces Monthly Essential Games to Three Titles

While Essential subscribers receive rotating monthly games, Extra and Premium tiers maintain persistent game catalogs exceeding 400 titles, with Premium adding classic games, game trials, and cloud streaming.

Dropping the monthly count from four Essential-tier offerings down to three isn’t a disastrous reduction, though it does depart from the trend Sony relied on throughout much of 2025 and into 2026, during which four-game months grew more prevalent than the original three-game standard established at PS Plus’s inception.

Player reception to the October selection proved mixed across community polls. Push Square reported that a majority of surveyed users described the monthly list unfavorably, with most respondents indicating they did not plan to download the featured games.

CBR and other media outlets characterized the monthly lineup as underwhelming relative to drops centered around major contemporary releases, although the supplementary perks included this time exceed the typical promotional extras Sony usually pairs with a monthly Essential rollout.
