Sony has introduced the PlayStation 5 Pro. The console offers significantly increased graphics performance, but one piece of news could dampen fans’ joy.
Sony today surprisingly presented the new PlayStation 5 Pro. In a YouTube presentation, chief architect Mark Cerny explained the console’s innovations. Sony wants to boost sales with improved ray tracing technology and a new design.
The PS5 Pro offers 45 percent more graphics performance than the previous model, says Cerny. This is achieved through a 67 percent higher number of processing units in the graphics unit and 28 percent faster graphics memory. A proprietary upscaling technology also guarantees higher image quality without compromising the refresh rate.
In addition to the technical upgrades, the PS5 Pro also offers improved heat generation and lower power consumption thanks to more modern manufacturing technologies. Players can also look forward to optimized ray tracing, which makes lighting effects and details more realistic. According to Sony, around 8,500 PS4 games will benefit from the improved performance.
In addition to the hardware improvements, Sony announced free updates for well-known games such as “Alan Wake 2”, “Assassin’s Creed: Shadows”, “Hogwarts Legacy” and “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth”. These titles will be specially optimized for the PS5 Pro and will be labeled “PS5 Pro Enhanced”. The so-called “PS5 Pro Game Boost” should also be able to display older games in higher quality.
The design is similar to that of the “normal” PS5, but has three parallel stripes to make it easier to distinguish. A disk drive does not appear to be included. The new console will be available from November 7, 2024, in time for the Christmas season.
The price of around 800 euros is significantly higher than many expected. Pre-orders are not yet possible. It remains to be seen whether there will be supply bottlenecks again like with the original PS5.
