Sony puts out the fire. Only three days after a controversial announcement concerning the popular game “Helldivers 2”, the Japanese firm reversed its decision to make a PlayStation Network (PSN) account compulsory for PC players who purchased it via the Steam platform. “The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation accounts to be linked for new players and for current players starting May 30, will not be moving forward,” the company informed via the PlayStation account on the X network, indicating that it had heard the players’ comments.

The unpopular announcement last Friday aroused the anger and frustration of many players for different reasons. If some did not want to create a PSN account, a platform which has suffered data leaks in the past, others would have found themselves with an inaccessible game, the PlayStation Network not being available in many countries. Sony’s decision, which would have come into effect this week, led to a wave of “review bombing” on Valve’s Steam platform. Developed by Arrowhead, the successful multiplayer game, which had a successful launch three months ago, has in fact received more than 270,000 unfavorable reviews, changing its rating to “extremely negative”. The criticism even extended to other Sony Steam games over the weekend.

“Waking up with yesterday’s sunshine replaced by dreary drizzle and chilling winds makes me think about how I spent my time during the rare moments when everything was perfect,” wrote the frustrated boss of Arrowhead on the X network, facing the situation, before Sony backpedaled. Explaining that he was not exempt from all reproaches, he revealed that the choice to have deactivated the link between the Steam and PSN accounts at the launch of the game was his to allow players to play “Helldivers 2”. “We knew about 6 months before launch that this would be mandatory for PS online titles,” he added on Sunday.
