Sony is bringing back its classic 1979 open-ear headphones with modern USB-C connectivity and a lightweight design weighing 38 grams, priced at $59.99 for the standard edition and $79.99 for a special Netflix collaboration.
Classic Walkman Audio Meets Modern USB-C
The audio giant has reached back into its archives to launch the Sony MDR-3R, a faithful modern reimagining of the open-ear headphones originally bundled with the Walkman TPS-L2 cassette player. The revival addresses a growing consumer appetite for wired audio simplicity that eliminates the need for battery charging or Bluetooth pairing.
Behind the retro appearance, Sony re-engineered the 23mm dynamic drivers based upon original hand drawings from 1979. According to Gizmodo, Sony does a good job of making sure low frequencies are audible. TechRadar noted that the original design had sound quality that was surprisingly good,
a characteristic the company aimed to capture while refining the frequency range for modern digital sources.
Wireless earbuds might dominate modern commuting, but Sony is betting that music lovers still appreciate simple retro wired headphones. Followers of hi-fidelity fashion trends will know that wired headphones are making a quiet comeback, driven by a desire for a more analogue, hands-on experience. Mindful of the zeitgeist spikes that helped us reach this point of reconnection with the past, the Japanese electronics giant knows a thing or two about making lightweight, high-quality headphones as the creator of the original Sony Walkman.

Lightweight Retro Headset Features Recycled Plastic
The headset retains the signature aesthetic of the vintage model. At 38 grams, it stands as the lightest pair of overhead headphones in the company’s current line-up, according to TechRadar. Buyers receive interchangeable foam ear pads in the box, allowing listeners to switch between blue and orange colorways.
The company also leaned into the retro aesthetic for the unboxing experience. Packaging and instruction manuals inherit the design of the original model. At the same time, modern manufacturing standards apply to the build: approximately 25% of the plastic used across the headset is recycled, and the retail packaging is completely plastic-free.
In-Line Controls and Stranger Things Edition
Trading old analog plugs for a native USB-C cable, the headset connects directly to current smartphones, tablets, and computers. The attached cable includes an in-line remote control and a built-in microphone for managing media playback and taking phone calls.
Coinciding with the standard launch, a dedicated Sony MDR-3R Stranger Things Edition is rolling out in partnership with Netflix. Priced at $79.99 / £59 / €69, the collector variant features an engraved series logo on the earcups, custom themed packaging, and a color scheme inspired by the character Max Mayfield that swaps standard cushions for red and black foam pads.

Retail Pricing and Availability
The standard Sony MDR-3R is available immediately through major retailers. Pricing is set at $59.99 in the US or $99.99 CAD in Canada through outlets including Amazon, Best Buy, and direct channels.
