Sony Closes Neon Koi and Firewalk Studios: A Tough Decision for the Gaming Community
Sony is shutting down Neon Koi and Firewalk Studios, marking a significant shift in its business strategy. In an update to employees, Hermen Hulst, CEO of the Studio Business Group at Sony Interactive Entertainment, stated that the decision was made after a thorough evaluation of the games portfolio and project status to ensure alignment with both near and long-term business priorities.
Regarding Neon Koi, Hulst emphasized that while “mobile remains a priority growth area for the studio business,” the company felt the need to concentrate on titles that align with PlayStation Studios’ legacy and have the potential to reach a broader global audience.
As for Firewalk Studios, Hulst mentioned that after spending considerable time examining all options, Sony determined that the best course of action was to permanently shut down the studio and discontinue its game development.
The closures will affect a notable number of employees. According to LinkedIn, Firewalk employs between 51-200 people, whereas Neon Koi has between 11-50 employees.
“I know none of this is easy news to hear, particularly with colleagues and friends departing SIE,” Hulst remarked. “Both decisions were given serious thought, and ultimately, we feel they are the right ones to strengthen the organization.”
Hulst acknowledged the talent within Neon Koi and Firewalk, affirming that efforts would be made to find placements for affected individuals within Sony’s global community of studios where possible. “While today is a difficult day, there is much to look forward to in the months ahead from the Studio Business Group and our teams,” he concluded.
