Sony’s New Turntables Aim to Eliminate Friction for Vinyl Newcomers and Enthusiasts

Sony is streamlining the vinyl experience with its new PS-LX3BT and PS-LX5BT turntables, designed to remove common barriers to entry for both curious newcomers and returning audiophiles. The company’s latest offerings prioritize simplicity and ease of use, addressing concerns around setup, compatibility, and digitization.

Re-Imagining the Analog Experience

According to a company release, Sony recognizes that even minor inconveniences can deter potential vinyl listeners. The PS-LX3BT and PS-LX5BT are built to address these “frictions,” offering a seamless experience from selecting a record to enjoying the music. The goal is to recapture the “analog ceremony of stylus meeting groove” without the technical hurdles often associated with turntables.

PS-LX3BT: The Entry Point for a New Generation

The PS-LX3BT is positioned as a Gen Z-friendly option, emphasizing a “just push play” philosophy. This fully automatic turntable features one-button playback, a built-in phono equalizer, and an included RCA cable for immediate connection to speakers. For those preferring a wireless setup, the PS-LX3BT also boasts Bluetooth connectivity (supporting SBC and aptX Adaptive codecs). A USB output with three-level gain control allows users to easily digitize their vinyl collections.

The turntable includes an integrated cartridge, an aluminum platter, and supports both 33 ⅓ and 45 RPM speeds, accommodating both 12” LPs and 7” singles. Pre-sales for the PS-LX3BT began today, with a price of $399.99.

PS-LX5BT: A Step Up in Fidelity and Design

The PS-LX5BT represents an upgrade for vinyl enthusiasts seeking a more refined experience. While retaining the convenience of full-automatic operation and Bluetooth connectivity, the PS-LX5BT incorporates a more rigid one-piece body, a step-up cartridge mounted on an aluminum tonearm, and a vibration-dampening rubber mat. These enhancements aim to deliver a richer, wider sound presentation.

The PS-LX5BT also features a higher-grade wired signal path with a removable cable and gold-plated audio jack for optimal audio quality. Like its counterpart, it includes a USB output and supports both 33 ⅓ and 45 RPM speeds. Pre-sales for the PS-LX5BT are scheduled to begin this spring, priced at $499.99.
