Sony, maker of the popular PlayStation game console series, is completely giving up trying to meet demand for its new console, the PlayStation 5, which was launched about a year ago, in favor of trying to get people to continue buying the old PlayStation 4 console, Bloomberg revealed this week.

According to the report, Sony originally planned to stop production of the previous generation of its console by the end of 2021 – but now, it intends to produce at least another million of its units by 2022. This is because the old console is simpler and cheaper to manufacture.

This is a strange, and even controversial, decision: the company claims that the reason for the shortage of new consoles is the crisis in the chip market – but if that was the case, continued production of the previous generation should not have been possible. In addition, encouraging consumers to purchase the older generation may cause gaming companies, which want to reach the largest possible audience, to invest most of their efforts in older devices, rather than the most advanced devices – which may mean that games released on the new console will not take advantage of its unique capabilities. Great frustration for those who purchased it to enjoy them.

Sony has denied in response that it even intended to stop producing the PlayStation 4 at the end of 2021, adding that “this is one of the best-selling consoles in history, and there is always a transition period between generations.” It is not clear which console models will continue to go off the production line. The PlayStation 4 was launched in 2013, and has since sold about 116 million units. In November 2021, a year after the launch of the PlayStation 5, Sony lowered its sales expectations from 16 million to at least 15 million by the end of that year, due to the shortage. However, it is still selling at a faster rate than the PlayStation 4 at the time.
