In case of fever – electrolytes

There is no single medicine for the common cold, says the pharmacist. According to her, when you have a cold, you need to relieve the specifically felt symptoms. However, it is equally important to maintain optimal fluid and electrolyte levels in the body.

“When we have a cold, our body starts to fight, as if turning on the thermoregulation process. Then, during fever, the body sweats more, thus trying to “bring down” the temperature.

Sweat also removes electrolytes, which are important in regulating the amount of water and its metabolism in the body. Avoiding dehydration is important for a faster recovery. The easiest way to do this is by drinking electrolyte solutions, as tea or water will not always be enough,” advises E. Ramaškienė.

Vitamin C is useful even when you are sick

This vitamin is well known to almost everyone as a helper for maintaining the normal functioning of the immune system, says the pharmacist. According to her, it is also effective when you get a cold or even the coronavirus.

“The stronger the immune system, the easier it is for a person to catch a cold or the coronavirus. However, if you haven’t used vitamin C before, it can serve you well even when you get sick. Due to its antioxidant effect, the vitamin can shorten the duration of cold symptoms. Only in this case, choose a stronger one – vitamin C 1000 mg”, advises pharmacist E. Ramaškienė.

Zinc is not only for beauty

Zinc is probably better known to most as a beauty vitamin responsible for the normal condition of nails, hair, skin and bones. However, the pharmacist emphasizes that it is useful for our body even when we are sick.

“Zinc saves by maintaining a normal immune system, so it can be called a natural protection against diseases such as colds, flu or coronavirus. Taking zinc regularly can also help reduce the frequency of infections. And if you start using it when you get sick, it can help you recover more easily from a cold or other viral diseases”, says E. Ramaškienė.

Vitamin D

The pharmacist says that vitamin D not only helps reduce the risk of colds, flu or coronavirus, but can also affect the course of these diseases in a positive direction.

“When our body lacks vitamin D, we are more likely to get viral colds.” Therefore, it can be noticed that over the past year, more and more doctors and other health specialists recommend taking vitamin D every day if you get a cold, flu or coronavirus, because it can alleviate the form of the illness,” says E. Ramaškienė.

The most important rules for treating a cold

Rest is important for a reason. The body fights intensively with a cold. When there is a fight against viruses, the body needs enough time to restore resources. The body fights viruses and colds most effectively when we are resting while sleeping. This is why rest is so important.

Relieve the symptoms with individual drugs. Do not rush to find medicines that will relieve all possible cold symptoms at once – listen to your body better. If your throat hurts – take medicine for its pain, if you cough or have a fever – take preparations that relieve these symptoms.

Don’t be afraid of pain medication. The pharmacist notices that sick people are often afraid of pain medication. She advises not to burden your body with painful symptoms. In addition, she reminds – if your throat hurts a lot, take anti-inflammatory painkillers instead of topical preparations.

Saline solutions in congestion. If you suffer from a runny nose, do not forget to regularly wash your nose with saline solutions or sea water. Rinse the nasal mucosa even if you additionally use nasal sprays or take systemic cold medicine.
