The Italian director had three strong nominations. A female dominated edition. Best Actor Anthony Hopkins for “Father” (for which he had already won the Hollywood Oscar)

Disappointment Italy. The wings tattooed on the shoulders of the German actress Annabelle, who presented the European Oscars with an energetic and intimidating air, made Jasmila Zbanic fly but left Paolo Sorrentino on the ground. It was the hand of God he had three strong nominations (but his run of Hollywood statuettes continues). Sorrentino was in video connection for the entire duration of the event, less fluvial and verbose than usual. But the air he pulled, given the afternoon silence of his entourage and of Netflix co-producing his moving autobiographical film (the story of a 16-year-old boy enchanted by Maradona who loses his parents to a trivial domestic accident), was that he would be left empty-handed.

Won the film on the 1995 Srebrenica massacre: wins as best film, best director and best actress with Jasna Duric). The Sarajevo-born director dedicates the film «to the victims and mothers who taught us how to transform destruction into life», and thanks our recently deceased Lina Wertmuller «who paved the way». The Aida of the title works as a translator and feels safe in the UN base but when the pressure of the Serbs rises in the perimeter where she works, and the massacre is imminent, she must get to safety with her family.

As a director at the European Oscars, it is just the second time in 34 years that a woman has won and the president of the EFA (European Festival Awards), Polish director Agnieszka Holland says that “it’s our night, we’re strong.”

And for the second year, due to Covid, the European Oscars took place online, from Berlin, the headquarters of an event with a strong “political” and inclusive flavor (Hollywood docet).

Favorite actor Anthony Hopkins (he was the only candidate absent online too) for Father by Florian Zeller (also wins as a screenwriter). It is the film with which Hopkins had already won the Oscar, in the role of the elderly person suffering from senile dementia who finds himself living in a home cage, his mind is unable to adapt to the present, he perceives traits of life lived but not combines them together, gets lost in tics, sinks into the void of knowledge.

Special awards to two directors, present in Berlin, the Danish Susanne Bier (“my father was born here in Berlin, and this award is proof of the resilience of European cinema”), and the Londoner Steve McQueen for the TV series Small Axe (“I dedicate it to the victims and survivors of the Grenfell tower fire”, about which he made a film).
