Kohima,

Mon District is located on the border with Myanmar in the northeastern state of Nagaland. Workers from the village of Oding and Mr. in the district were returning home in a van after working in a coal mine there.

Security forces, who were involved in counter-terrorism operations, allegedly mistakenly opened fire on workers in the van, who were believed to be insurgents. PTI reports that up to 11 innocent civilians were killed in the attack.

Angered by the incident, locals apparently surrounded the security forces and tried to attack. As a result, some local media outlets reported that security forces had fired in self-defense. Nagaland Chief Minister Nabiu Rio has ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident and called on the people to keep the peace.

According to the police, the situation is under control at present. The army has also ordered an inquiry into the incident. Home Minister Amit Shah expressed grief over the incident and expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims. He said the state government would set up a high-level special inquiry into the incident and conduct a comprehensive inquiry to bring justice to the families of the victims.

The NSCN (K) faction of the Nagaland National Socialist Council, a banned organization, dominates the Mon district, which borders Myanmar. The Nagaland National Socialist Council (NCNC), also known as the NSCN, is armed to fight for the unification of the Nagas in Myanmar and India to form a wider Nagaland (Nagalim). Therefore, the security forces are involved in the operation against this organization in Nagaland.
