Organized from February 23 to 25 under the theme “Land of almond trees, land of the future”, this festival is part of the “Green Generation 2020-2030” strategy.

Having become an unmissable event in the sector, the Tafraout Almond Festival aims to be an economic, cultural and artistic crossroads, and constitutes a real locomotive for the development of almond cultivation.

This event also aims to contribute to the promotion of the heritage of the Anti-Atlas and to the improvement of the socio-economic conditions of local populations through the consolidation of the principles of the social and solidarity economy. It also aims to promote the almond sector, the area’s flagship and certified product.

Built in the heart of the town of Tafraout over an area of 2,000 m², the Festival sees the participation of more than 100 exhibitors of local products, coming from different regions of Morocco as well as professionals in the sector. It plans to welcome more than 80,000 visitors.

Alongside the Festival, several activities are organized, including artistic, folkloric, educational and cultural activities. Workshops aimed at strengthening the capacities of participants are also on the agenda.

The opening of this festival was marked by the presence of the Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests, Mohammed Sadiki, the wali of the Souss-Massa region, the governor of the province of Tiznit, the president of the Council of the Souss-Massa region, the president of the regional Chamber of Agriculture, elected officials, as well as a large delegation of ministry officials.

As a reminder, the almond industry plays an important social role by creating around 27 million working days per year. In order to consolidate the achievements and further develop this sector as part of the new “Green Generation 2020-2030” strategy, a new program contract is being concluded between the government and the Interprofessional Federation for the Development of Fruit Trees.

The objectives of this program contract, set for 2030, aim to plant almond trees on an additional area of 108,000 hectares.

Note that the total area occupied by almond trees amounts to 230,510 hectares at the national level during the 2022-2023 season. The main production areas are mainly concentrated in the regions of Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceima, Fès-Meknes and the Oriental. The average production of unshelled almonds is estimated at around 146,096 tonnes.

As for the region, the area intended for almond cultivation is estimated at more than 23,431 Ha, particularly in the Anti-Atlas, with a production of 6,900 tonnes/year (shelled).
