Former South African president Jacob Zuma said on Saturday the 17th that he will not vote for the ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), in the 2024 general elections.

Zuma’s statement comes as the ANC faces a series of challenges, with recent polls indicating it is likely to win less than 50% of the vote next year, forcing it to form a coalition government to stay in power.

Zuma told journalists that the ANC and the current president, Cyril Ramaphosa, are “representatives of white monopoly capital”.

As such, Zuma said, his support will go to the newly formed Umkhonto we Sizwe party, named after the now-defunct military wing of the ANC.

Zuma was president of South Africa between 2009 and 2018, in a term fraught with allegations of corruption.

The ANC political party was at the forefront of the liberation movement to free South Africa from the racist apartheid system. It has governed South Africa since the first post-apartheid elections that placed political icon Nelson Mandela as president.
