KINSHASA – The United Nations Stabilization Mission in Congo (MONUSCO) has already begun its gradual withdrawal from Congolese soil, in accordance with the disengagement plan recently adopted by the UN Security Council.

In a lively joint press briefing this Saturday, Congolese Foreign Minister Christophe Lutundula and the head of MONUSCO, Bintou Keita, presented some lines of this disengagement plan.

According to the head of MONUSCO, the withdrawal of the UN mission from Congolese soil began in its first stage in South Kivu. This disengagement will last until June 30, 2024, the date of the end of this first phase. This will lead the United Nations Security Council to an evaluation, before beginning the second phase which concerns the province of North Kivu and then the third Ituri.

According to the sequenced plan, 14 bases in South Kivu will be handed over to the FARDC, said Bintou Keita.

For his part, the head of Congolese diplomacy indicated that the DRC is committed to respecting the sequenced and coordinated plan for the withdrawal of MONUSCO. “The Head of State’s wish that the withdrawal of MONUSCO is the best example of the disengagement of a UN mission in the world,” declared Christophe Lutundula.
