The Republic of Korea Armed Forces Counterintelligence Command is investigating the leak of personal information of national intelligence officers specializing in collecting information about the DPRK.

As reported by Day.Az with reference to TASS, reported with reference to sources agency Yonhap.

About a month ago, the Armed Forces Intelligence Command discovered a leak of classified information that included personal details of its employees working abroad. The leak allegedly contained information about “illegal intelligence officers” and people working under diplomatic cover. Some were even forced to return home because of the disclosure, the agency said.

South Korean authorities have discovered that many of the intelligence officers whose data may have fallen into the hands of criminals were collecting information about the DPRK. As Yonhap notes, Seoul sees signs that information about the intelligence officers was sent to the People’s Republic.

Authorities are investigating the actions of a civilian employee of the military intelligence command, whose personal laptop was leaked with classified information. It is assumed that this computer was the source of the leak. But the person involved claims that his laptop was hacked.

This is not the first such scandal in the South Korean intelligence service. In 2018, the country’s authorities established that an employee of the military intelligence command had been selling classified data since 2013.
