South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has called for a thorough investigation into sex crimes in a virtual environment after reports that deepfake photos and videos of women in a sexual context were being circulated on the Telegram chat platform, Reuters reported.

On Saturday, the founder of “Telegram” Pavel Durov was arrested. His detention on French soil is part of an investigation into child pornography, drug trafficking and fraud in the communications app.

Korea’s media regulator plans to hold a meeting tomorrow to discuss measures to counter deepfake technology with sexual content. “This is using technology that relies on anonymity as a protection. This is a clear criminal act,” Yoon told the hearing.

According to South Korean police, 297 cases of deepfake crimes were reported in the first seven months of the year. Online sex crimes related to them have increased. This is more than the 180 cases registered last year and almost twice as many as in 2021, when data on such crimes first began to be collected, BTA writes.
