If you want to study medicine, consider doing it in South Korea. The government predicts that the population will age so much by 2035 that it is preparing a plan Recruit 10,000 new doctors for that year.

Although it may sound strange, health workers are not excited about the idea, according to a report of Euronews. The first objection they raise is that Universities are not happy to receive so many students in the next 10 years.

The medicine is one of the highest paying professions in South Korea. But those who are already practicing fear that such a sharp increase for professionals would pay them significantly less.

The anger is so great that thousands of doctors have started to strike since the end of February protest against the reform of the admission and education process for this profession.

The doctors went on strike

According to data from the South Korean Ministry of Healthcited by France24, “some 8,940 trainee doctors left their jobs in protest“. That represents more than 72% of doctors across the country.

The South Korean government threatened to suspend the licenses of the professionals who participated in the strike, but the doctors were not intimidated.

The result: hospitals can’t cope, mainly in emergency and pediatric servicesleading to cancel surgeries and other procedures. According to Euronews, “doctors on strike are fractions” of all those currently in the country. But “In some hospitals they are between 30% and 40%” of the team.

With this view of health for the population, the Ministry of Health of South Korea had to comply and said so they will no longer suspend the licenses of doctors who return to hospitals. However, the threat remains for those who continue to strike.
