The South Korean space agency has captured the first before-and-after images of a spent SpaceX rocket impacting the lunar surface. The Korean Aerospace Administration (KASA) released imagery on August 6 from its Danuri lunar orbiter showing the site where a Falcon 9 upper stage struck the Moon on Wednesday, August 5.

The impact occurred at a speed of 5,400 mph (8,700 kph). According to the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, Danuri made multiple passes over the crash site, producing photos that show a noticeably darker area of terrain where the rocket carved out a crater and dispersed rock and dust.

Cause and Trajectory of the Impact

The expendable upper stage was part of a January 15, 2025, launch that deployed ispace’s RESILIENCE and Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost Mission 1 lunar lander under NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative. While Falcon 9 upper stages typically burn up in Earth’s atmosphere, the lunar transfer orbit used for this mission made that impossible.

SpaceX stated that solar activity and gravitational forces placed the stage on an accidental collision course with the Moon. The company noted that a controlled disposal maneuver is not always possible and that such impacts are rare but can occur with objects in these specific types of orbits. NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory had previously confirmed the stage had a 100% chance of impacting the Moon near the Bell and Einstein craters.

Scientific Implications and Observations

NASA scientists planned to use the event to refine space-tracking techniques and collect lunar data. The rocket stage was expected to create a crater approximately 12 feet deep and 60 feet wide. Jared Isaacman, head of NASA, noted that the lunar surface is struck by meteoroids hourly, with impacts comparable to this upper stage occurring roughly every six days.

Observing artificial impacts provides scientists with insight into how ejecta plumes behave, which helps in understanding lunar geology and refining models for future science missions. While the impact was not visible from Earth by the naked eye, the NASA Meteoroid Environments Office attempted to image the event using ground-based telescopes, though lighting and weather conditions presented potential difficulties.

Lunar Debris and Future Missions

The event has highlighted discussions regarding the need for rules to manage lunar space to avoid an uncontrolled buildup of debris. Chiara Manfletti, head of Neuraspace, has suggested that stakeholders may need to designate specific dumping grounds on the Moon as lunar traffic increases.

The Danuri orbiter, which was launched by a SpaceX Falcon 9 in 2022, has had its initial one-year mission extended twice, most recently through 2027. Current plans indicate that Danuri will intentionally create its own impact crater in March 2028. NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter also attempted to capture the SpaceX impact and is expected to fly over the site the week following August 6 to view the aftermath.
