New Fast Boat Service to Boost Inter-Island Connectivity and Economic Growth in Southeast Sulawesi
A new fast boat service connecting kendari and Raha has been launched by the Southeast Sulawesi provincial government, aiming to stimulate regional economic growth by improving inter-island connectivity and easing logistical challenges.the initiative underscores the critical role of maritime transport in supporting economies based around archipelagic regions.
The launch, announced Saturday, is intended to facilitate the smoother flow of goods, services, and people between islands, unlocking economic potential beyond the provincial mainland. A senior official stated the project is designed to reduce longstanding logistical bottlenecks that have historically hampered advancement in the region.
“Southeast Sulawesi is an archipelago,so communication networks and maritime transportation are essential,” the official explained. “The presence of this new mode of transport is expected to drive economic growth and improve the welfare of our people.”
The newly inaugurated fast boat boasts a considerable capacity of 388 passengers, configured with 260 executive-class seats and 128 VIP-class seats.Provincial authorities anticipate this increased capacity will effectively address the high volume of travel between Kendari, the provincial capital, and Raha, the capital of Muna district.
The improved transport network is expected to foster more balanced economic activity, ensuring development isn’t solely concentrated on the mainland but is distributed more equitably across the island regions. According to a representative from the Kendari Class II Harbourmaster and Port Authority (KSOP), the service will operate on a regular daily schedule, providing predictability for both passengers and businesses.
Departures from Kendari are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Central indonesia Time (WITA), with boats departing from raha at 9:00 a.m. WITA. Ticket prices are set at 160,000 rupiah for executive class and 260,000 rupiah for VIP class, a spokesperson confirmed to reporters.
Beyond its long-term economic impact, the new service is strategically timed to accommodate a predicted surge in passenger numbers leading up to the Eid al-Fitr holiday period, a time when travel demand typically peaks. “Time efficiency is the main advantage offered to the public,” one official noted, adding that faster travel times will alleviate pressure on existing transportation options.
the journey to Raha is now expected to take approximately 2.5 hours, a significant reduction in travel time. Authorities hope this enhanced efficiency will meet public demand for reliable and comfortable transportation during the busy holiday season.
