Controversial 9-Hour Shift for Vande Bharat Train Drivers Withdrawn After Public Outcry

Madurai – In a swift response to public outrage, the Southern Railway has withdrawn its order imposing a 9-hour continuous work schedule on the drivers of the ‘Vande Bharat’ train that runs from Tirunelveli to Chennai. The decision came after a report condemning the long working hours was published in a local newspaper.

Currently, the Vande Bharat train operates on two routes, between Tirunelveli and Chennai. The service is divided, with Tirunelveli drivers operating the train from Tirunelveli to Trichy and Chennai drivers taking over for the Trichy to Chennai leg. A similar arrangement is in place for the return journey, with Trichy drivers taking the train from Chennai to Trichy and Tirunelveli drivers completing the journey from Trichy to Tirunelveli.

However, the Southern Railway recently made changes to this arrangement, issuing an order to operate the train from Tirunelveli to Chennai with Tirunelveli drivers, and from Chennai to Tirunelveli with Madurai drivers. This decision meant that the working hours for the drivers would exceed 9 hours, warranting strong condemnation from the public and media.

Reacting swiftly to the backlash, a consultation meeting was held in Chennai under the chairmanship of Southern Railway Principal Staff Officer Harikrishnan. Attendees included SRMU General Secretary Kannaiah, Madurai Divisional Secretary Rafeeq, Running Workers Division Secretary Akuraja, and others who presented their concerns.

Following the meeting, it was announced that the Railway’s order would be withdrawn, bringing a sigh of relief to the Vande Bharat drivers. The decision reflects the Southern Railway’s commitment to the well-being and safety of its employees and highlights the significance of public feedback in shaping railway policies.

The withdrawal of the 9-hour continuous work order has been welcomed by the affected drivers and their families. The decision ensures that drivers can perform their duties without compromising their safety and work-life balance, setting a positive precedent for employee welfare.

Moving forward, it is hoped that the Southern Railway will continue to prioritize the well-being of its employees while providing efficient and safe transportation for passengers. As the Vande Bharat train continues to serve as a crucial link between Tirunelveli and Chennai, important lessons can be learned from this incident to ensure a better working environment for all railway staff.
