Soweto Police Bust Family Mandrax Drug Lab in Meadowlands

Police arrested four suspects in Soweto’s Meadowlands on October 16, 2026, after discovering an illicit Mandrax manufacturing operation situated at the back of a residential family home following a targeted overnight surveillance operation by organized crime units.

Organized crime investigators in Gauteng tracked the Meadowlands property overnight on October 15 following a tip-off regarding suspected drug production. A second tip-off on the morning of October 16 indicated that the illicit substances were about to be moved prompting officers to act swiftly. Police teams comprising the Gauteng Organised Crime Investigations’ Tracing and Narcotics units, Police Emergency Services, and the Hawks had been surveilling the house since the previous evening.

When authorities moved in, they discovered three suspects actively working in a room at the back of the family residence. A fourth suspect was taken into custody shortly afterward. The individuals arrested are aged between 21 and 25 years old.

Family Residence Used for Illicit Production

Law enforcement officials described the site as a domestic compound where illicit manufacturing was tucked directly behind a primary household. Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili explained the layout of the property to reporters at the scene.

It’s a family house, and then we know that all the people that have been arrested are related to one another and they are staying in that house. It is a family house, they are conducting this drug manufacturing behind the main house. There is a small house and then there is an open space where they are doing these things.

Inside the workspace, investigators spotted at least three bags of fully developed Mandrax tablets. Officials also noted the presence of layout arrangements containing production materials, chemical agents, and manufacturing equipment slated for seizure and laboratory analysis.

Forensic Processing and Pending Charges

Specialized units including Criminal Record and Crime Scene Management along with Laboratory personnel deployed resources to comb through the property. Authorities recovered both manufacturing inputs and finished goods.

A substantial quantity of pills suspected to have been manufactured somewhere else was also found.

Because organized crime investigators are prohibited from handling exhibits before forensic processing concludes, a final official count of the seized tablets remains pending formal completion by the LCRC team. The case file has been formally transferred to the Hawks for continued investigation as the four suspects prepare to face drug-related charges in court.
