There are 620 close-up images of the impact between the Dart spacecraft and the asteroid Dimorphos. The Dart spacecraft hit the distant asteroid in an unprecedented test to see if a potentially threatening space rock could be knocked off course. It was the first time that the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope have observed the same celestial target at the same time. The galactic impact occurred 7 million kilometers from Earth. The spacecraft hit the small space rock at 14,000 miles per hour. Scientists hope the collision changed the asteroid’s orbit. NASA won’t know how far the spacecraft shifted the asteroid’s course for a couple of months.
