Lie in bed for 60 days and get 18,000 euros for it? This study aims to explore the consequences of weightlessness in space on astronauts.
To further study the effects of weightlessness on the human body, scientists are looking for volunteers willing to observe strict bed rest for 60 days. The study is being carried out by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and is part of the preparations for possible flights to the Moon or Mars.
The volunteers are supposed to act as “terrestrial astronauts” and simulate a long journey in weightlessness to another celestial body. You will spend 60 days in a bed with a lowered headboard. Researchers hope to better understand methods for preventing problems caused by weightlessness, such as dizziness and incoordination.
Study simulates astronauts’ bodies in space
The study participants’ beds were tilted six degrees so that their heads were lower than their feet. “With this inclination, the fluids in the body shift in almost the same way as astronauts do in space,” said study leader Edwin Mulder on Wednesday.
“The pressure in the head increases, physical inactivity causes muscles and bones to break down, the sense of balance is confused and the cardiovascular system changes.” These physical changes could pose a major problem for astronauts after landing on the Moon or Mars. “This can endanger a mission,” emphasized the DLR.
Together with the US space agency NASA, DLR is now trying to find out what effects possible countermeasures could have. For example, a group of test subjects have their feet pressed against a board using straps to simulate the feeling of standing. Other participants will also do strength and endurance training and a third group will receive electrical impulses (EMS) to stimulate the muscles.
Not easy money
According to DLR, bed rest studies have become common since the 1980s and have provided important insights for space travel. Researchers are currently concentrating primarily on long-term missions, such as to Mars.
Despite an allowance of 18,000 euros for the 60 days in bed, Mulder warns. It’s not easy money. He emphasizes that it is a “real challenge” to lie down continuously for two months.
People between the ages of 24 and 55 can apply for this study, provided they are healthy, non-smokers and speak German well. They must also be between 1.53 meters and 1.90 meters tall and have a BMI between 18 and 30.
